Located along the gorgeous Skykomish River, Gold Bar Washington is a town steeped in history. Since 2014, Gold Bar Marijuana has been serving both locals and visitors who’ve come to explore the Snohomish County city’s rich roots.
While Gold Bar was actually founded as a mining settlement, and actually took its name from the panning which took place in the post-gold rush years of the late 19th century, it’s impossible to separate the history of the town from the Great Northern Railroad. Just as the frenzy for gold was coming to an end, the town got a much-needed boost when it was chosen as the site of a construction camp for the expanding railway, and the designation would be the reason the city would eventually come to be dubbed the the “Gateway to the Cascades.” The settlement’s place in the chain of rail service which stretched from the 13 original colonies of the eastern seaboard, across the great plains, and all the way to the new frontier of the west came to define the town, and quickly lead to a construction and population boom. Today, visitors can learn about those exciting, pioneering days at the Gold Bar Depot Museum and Historical Society, which features plenty of artifacts from both the prospecting era and the golden age of rail travel. Looking at the the scarred wooden bench where passengers waited for trains over 100 years ago, it’s impossible not to feel connected to that romantic, bygone time.
So if you’ve got a train fanatic in the family, or are just a general history buff, you owe it to yourself to make a stop in this beautiful, historic Northwest town.
